About

What Moral-o-Mat is — and what it isn't.

Purpose

Moral-o-Mat is a small web app for thinking for yourself, not for measuring or judging. You answer statements on a 5-point scale and get a multi-dimensional values profile as a radar chart and as a moral.md file.

Moral-o-Mat is an independent project. It is not affiliated with the book “Der Moralomat” (Pia Frey, 2015) or with the Wahl-O-Mat of the German Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb).

Method

Statements come from a published, validated instrument:

  • Name: Moral Foundations Questionnaire 2
  • Language: en
  • Source: Atari, M., Haidt, J., Graham, J., Koleva, S., Stevens, S. T., & Dehghani, M. (2023). Morality beyond the WEIRD: How the nomological network of morality varies across cultures. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 125(5), 1157–1188. https://doi.org/10.1037/pspp0000470. Itemtexte (englisch) nach Musa, Müller & Hopp (2026), PLOS ONE, https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0345599, S1 Appendix, CC BY 4.0

Scale: 1 (Strongly disagree) to 5 (Strongly agree). At least 4 answers per scale are required to compute a value; otherwise the UI shows “too few answers”.

Values are raw means — they are not normalised and have no percentile ranks. Without norm data from the original study, normalisation would not be defensible.

Scores are the means of your answers on the 1 to 5 scale. They are not compared with a norm sample, so a score says nothing about where you stand relative to other people.

The statements are the original English MFQ-2 items (36 items, six per foundation).

Limits of the questionnaire

The statements are fixed and are not changed here. Some distinctions are covered only roughly by the MFQ-2:

  • Equal outcomes and equal opportunities: “Equality” asks about equal outcomes, “Proportionality” about reward for contribution. Equal opportunity lies in between and has no scale of its own.
  • Given and chosen communities: “Loyalty” asks about country, community and team. Whether you were born into a community or chose it is not distinguished.
  • Respect and authority: “Authority” combines respect for parents and elders, traditions and leaders.

If a statement misses something for you, write it in the notes field. Notes appear in your moral.md.
